How to Install a New Ice Maker Water Valve in Your Refrigerator

By PRS Parts Inc.

The ice maker in your refrigerator is a convenient feature, but when the water valve fails, it can stop producing ice altogether. Replacing a faulty ice maker water valve is a straightforward repair for many homeowners. At PRS Parts Inc., we carry OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) replacement parts and offer expert advice to make sure your repair goes smoothly. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you install a new ice maker water valve.

What Is the Ice Maker Water Valve?

The ice maker water valve is a small solenoid-controlled component located at the back of your refrigerator, typically near the bottom. It controls the flow of water to the ice maker and water dispenser. If this valve becomes clogged or fails electrically, it can prevent water from reaching the ice tray.

Signs Your Water Valve Needs Replacing

  • Ice maker stops making ice

  • Water dispenser stops working

  • Low water flow or hollow ice cubes

  • Leaking or puddling near the back of the fridge

Tools & Supplies You'll Need

  • OEM replacement water valve (get the correct model from PRS Parts Inc.)

  • Adjustable wrench or nut driver

  • Towel or shallow container

  • Screwdriver (typically Phillips)

  • Safety gloves (optional but recommended)

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1. Unplug the Refrigerator

Safety first. Always disconnect power before beginning any repair. Also, shut off the water supply to the refrigerator.

2. Locate the Water Valve

Move your refrigerator away from the wall. The valve is usually found behind the lower rear panel.

3. Remove the Access Panel

Use a screwdriver to take off the rear lower panel and expose the water valve and connections.

4. Disconnect the Old Valve

  • Place a towel or shallow tray beneath the valve to catch any water.

  • Unscrew or unclip the water lines connected to the valve.

  • Disconnect the electrical harness(es) connected to the valve.

5. Install the New Water Valve

  • Connect the new valve to the water lines. Make sure the connections are secure and not cross-threaded.

  • Plug in the electrical connectors.

  • Mount the valve into the same position as the original using screws or clips.

6. Reassemble and Test

  • Reattach the access panel.

  • Turn on the water supply.

  • Plug the refrigerator back in.

  • Wait a few hours and check if the ice maker is operating correctly.

Tips from the PRS Team

  • Don’t overtighten plastic water lines—this can cause cracking or leaks.

  • If your valve has multiple solenoids (common in fridge/freezer combos), make sure you connect each line to the correct outlet.

  • Still unsure? Our parts experts can walk you through identifying the right valve for your model.
